Hands-on training
Your team, ready to act
You may have extinguishers around your workplace. Did you know OSHA prohibits employees from using them unless they’ve been trained?
What OSHA requires
“Where the employer has provided portable fire extinguishers for employee use in the workplace, the employer shall also provide an educational program to familiarize employees with the general principles of fire extinguisher use and the hazards involved with incipient stage firefighting.”
Occupational Safety and Health Act
In other words, workers must be trained to:
- Recognize when to use a portable fire extinguisher
- Operate the fire extinguisher correctly
Hands-on doesn't have to mean live fire
According to a July 1991 OSHA interpretation letter, employers don't have to start and put out fires to simulate emergency conditions during training. As a minimum, hands-on training should include actually discharging extinguishers appropriate for the types of fire expected, unracking standpipe hoses, and test-sounding fire alarm boxes.
